Introduction and Start of a Pillow-top for a Queen Size Mattress

I have had a fantasy to fix-up old pieces of furniture with crocheted fabrics made by me, probably since I first started to crochet. So when my husband joked about making a pillow-top for our queen size mattress. I took it as a challenge.

This challenge came about when we stopped to look at mattresses at a big box furniture place and got sticker shock on how much they wanted for a simple mattress. I know there are cheaper places to buy one. But, it is nice sometimes to try out a fantasy. Besides I think crochet top would last longer then any mattress.

I have decided since this is not going to be where people can see it I will be stash busting with #4 weight type yarns. First up will Red Heart Super Saver. Using a I/9/5.5 mm Hook. The stitch I will be using is the Thermal Stitch. I chose the thermal stitch because of the built in doubleness of the stitch.

Here is blog post about how to do the Thermal Stitch  Heart Hook Home Blog

To begin with I crocheted 210 chain stitch, which came to 70" or 5'10" long.

Then I single crochet in around using the chain as the base bottom of the pillow.  To do this I chain in one loop then at the ends I stitch 3 sc to make the turn and sc in the other loop.

Here is an close-up of the 1st row of actual thermal stitch.

I also have a blog following all of my Works-In-Progress Projects. Cloakroom Creations Blog follows the 12 WIPPs that I am working on. I start a new WIPP every month, and drop one from last years.

Thank you for your interest and time. Until next time stay safe.
